Territorial Structure
In order to carry out its responsibilities, SERIDA has several experiment centres, stations and farms distributed among the Asturian municipalities of Villaviciosa, Gijón, Grado, Illano and Quirós:
SERIDA Villaviciosa.
The main headquarters of SERIDA is located in Villaviciosa, as well as the Research, Technology and Service, and Administration and Support Departments. It boasts a 90-hectare estate on which to carry out R&D activities in the areas of Nutrition, Grassland and Forage, Animal Production Systems and Horticultural and Forest Crops. It also has an experiment cellar and facilities for research into food technology, an official service for the analysis of cider, feed and forage (with UNE ISO 17025 certification), a phytopathology and genetics laboratory and a tasting room for food sensory testing. These premises house the library and the Transfer and Training Section, which provides for the preparation of publications and the dissemination of SERIDA information. seridavilla@serida.org
SERIDA Deva Gijón. Animal Biotechnology Centre.
This centre carries out SERIDA competences in matters of the genetic selection and improvement of dairy and beef cattle. It implements research and technology development activities in the field of animal biotechnology, specifically in the areas of reproduction and genetics, as the basis for livestock-breeding improvement. It offers its services to the cattle-raising sector as regards the introduction of novel reproduction technologies and the use of novel assisted-selection techniques for the development of genetic improvement programmes. This develops research activities for the on-going development and continuous updating of laboratory diagnostic techniques for their application in routine analyses in livestock hygiene campaigns and wild animal and salmonoid disease control campaigns, as well as carrying out applied research in the field of Animal Healthcare seridadeva@serida.org
La Mata Agricultural Experiment Station Grado.
With a surface area of 20 hectares , this centre complements research programmes into animal production systems (cattle, sheep and goats) and Horticultural and forest crops. It also carries out testing on varieties of pasturage and fodder crops, as well as tests concerning minimum cultivation in pasture and forage implementation. This is where the forest research programme is developed. seridagrado@serida.org
"El Carbayal" Experiment Station Illano .
Situated in western Asturias at an altitude of 1,000 metres, it has a surface area of 150 hectares. Research into extensive animal production systems and their influence on improving biodiversity is developed here.
"Cueva Palacios" Experiment Farm Quirós.
Situated at an altitude of 1,700 metres, it occupies a surface area of 60 hectares of mountain pasture and constitutes the seasonal base for studies on valley/mountain pass animal production systems.
